PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Dementia is the biggest global challenge for social-health systems in the 21st century. It is estimated that in 2040 the number of people with dementia in Slovakia will rise to 180,000. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. The evidence-based findings point to its currently unsuccessful pharmacological treatment and to the importance of secondary prevention. 25 protective and risk factors are recognized, with potentially modifiable factors representing 35% of all risk factors. The project aim is to verify the effectiveness of eco-social and behavioural interventions in preventing the burden of caregivers for people with Alzheimer’s disease and to formulate evidence-based recommendations for practice and public social-health policy. A series of interventions for caregivers will be based on an analysis of the relationships between demographic, psychosocial and behavioural factors of dementia and their impact on functional status and quality of life of persons with dementia.
